1. Adult-Only Access

Entry to the casino at Belvarian Stay is strictly restricted to guests who are aged 21 years or older. This age requirement applies to all casino gaming areas, gaming machines, table games and any other wagering activity conducted on the property, regardless of whether a guest intends to play.

Our team members are trained to verify age on entry. Any guest who appears to be under 21 will be asked to produce a recognised form of photographic identification before being permitted to enter. Accepted documents include a current New Zealand driver licence, a current New Zealand or overseas passport, or another government-issued photographic identity document. Guests who are unable to produce satisfactory identification will be respectfully declined entry.

Parents and guardians are reminded that minors are not permitted in casino areas at any time, even when accompanied by an adult. If you observe a person who appears to be under the minimum age in a gaming area, we ask that you notify a team member immediately.

2. Gambling Is Always Optional

Belvarian Stay is a full-service hotel and leisure property. Visiting our casino is entirely optional, and none of our hotel services, amenities or guest privileges are conditional on participation in gambling. Guests are never required, pressured or incentivised in a way that removes genuine freedom of choice to wager.

We encourage every guest who does choose to gamble to approach it as one leisure activity among many — something done for enjoyment within a budget they are comfortable with, rather than as a source of income or a way to recover money that has already been spent.

Principles of Play We Encourage

  • Decide on a spending limit before you start and treat it as final.
  • Gamble only with money set aside for entertainment.
  • Never borrow money to gamble.
  • Accept that outcomes are determined by chance and that the house holds a mathematical edge over time.
  • Treat any winnings as a bonus, not an expectation.
  • Never chase losses by increasing bets or extending a session beyond your planned limits.
  • Balance gambling time with other activities during your stay.

3. Time and Spending Limits

Setting personal limits before a gaming session begins is one of the most effective ways to ensure that gambling remains within a comfortable boundary. Belvarian Stay supports guests in doing this in the following ways.

Setting Your Own Limits

We recommend deciding, before you enter the casino, on both a time limit (how long you intend to play) and a loss limit (the maximum amount you are prepared to spend). Writing these down, or sharing them with a companion, makes them easier to honour in the moment.

Practical Limit-Setting Strategies

Limit Type What to Decide in Advance Why It Helps
Session time limit A specific duration (e.g. one hour) after which you will leave, regardless of outcome Prevents sessions from extending unconsciously; keeps gambling proportionate to other leisure time
Loss limit A fixed amount you are comfortable spending as entertainment, with no plan to recoup it Removes the temptation to chase losses; keeps gambling within a household budget
Win limit A point at which you will cash out and stop, even if you feel on a run Locks in a positive outcome and avoids giving winnings back through continued play
Visit frequency limit How many times per week or month you intend to visit the casino Keeps gambling a periodic leisure choice rather than a regular habit

Our casino team members are available to answer questions and will not encourage guests to exceed the limits they have set for themselves. If you wish to discuss limit-setting privately, please speak with a member of our Guest Services team.

4. Recognising When Gambling Is Causing Concern

For the majority of guests, gambling at Belvarian Stay is an enjoyable part of a broader holiday experience. For some people, however, gambling can gradually shift from leisure to something that causes difficulty. Recognising early signs of this change can make it easier to take action.

The following experiences may indicate that gambling is having an unwanted impact on a person's life. They are offered as informational prompts only.

Signs That May Suggest a Change in Gambling Behaviour

  • Spending more time or money gambling than originally intended, on a consistent basis.
  • Finding it difficult to stop or leave when you planned to.
  • Returning to gamble soon after a session, particularly after a loss.
  • Using gambling as a way to escape worry, boredom or difficult feelings.
  • Becoming restless or irritable when not gambling or when attempting to reduce gambling.
  • Keeping the extent of your gambling secret from family or close friends.
  • Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund gambling.
  • Gambling interfering with work, study, family commitments or personal relationships.
  • Feeling guilt or regret after a gambling session, yet returning anyway.
  • Believing that a big win will resolve financial difficulties caused by gambling.

If any of these experiences feel familiar, we encourage you to speak with a trusted person or to reach out to a support resource. Details of how to access support, including through the property itself, are set out in Sections 6 and 7 of this page.

5. Taking Breaks

Regular breaks during a gaming session help guests maintain perspective, review their position against their pre-set limits, and make considered decisions rather than reactive ones. Belvarian Stay actively supports guests taking breaks.

Our Approach to Breaks

  • Comfort facilities: Seating, refreshment and rest areas are available adjacent to the casino floor for guests who wish to pause without leaving the building.
  • No pressure to continue: Our team will never encourage a guest to return to play or suggest that stopping is unwelcome. A guest who wishes to pause is under no obligation to explain their decision.
  • Reality checks: If a guest asks a team member to remind them of the time or to prompt them when a self-imposed time limit has been reached, we will do so discreetly and without judgement.
  • Leaving the casino: Guests are of course free to leave at any time. The wider hotel facilities offer a range of ways to spend time away from the casino during a visit.

If you are finding it difficult to take a break even when you intend to, this may be a useful prompt to reflect on your gambling and to consider the support options described below.

6. Self-Exclusion at Belvarian Stay

Self-exclusion is a formal arrangement through which a guest asks Belvarian Stay to refuse them entry to the casino for a defined period. It is a voluntary, guest-initiated measure and is available to any guest at any time, without a requirement to provide reasons.

How Self-Exclusion Works

Guests who wish to self-exclude should speak in person with a member of our Guest Services or Casino Management team. The process is confidential, handled with respect and takes effect as quickly as practicable once the arrangement has been confirmed.

Key Features of Our Self-Exclusion Arrangement

  • Duration: Guests may request an exclusion period of a minimum of six months. Longer periods, including indefinite exclusion, are available on request.
  • Scope: The exclusion covers all gaming areas within the Belvarian Stay casino. A guest who is subject to a self-exclusion arrangement will be refused entry to those areas for the duration.
  • Identification: Guests entering a self-exclusion arrangement will be asked to provide a photograph to assist our team in identifying and respectfully redirecting them during the exclusion period.
  • No revocation during the minimum period: To protect the effectiveness of the arrangement, we will not lift or suspend a self-exclusion during the agreed minimum period, regardless of subsequent requests to do so.
  • Reinstatement: At the end of an agreed exclusion period, reinstatement to the casino requires a deliberate, in-person request. Access is not reinstated automatically.
  • Confidentiality: The existence of a self-exclusion arrangement is treated as confidential personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

To begin a self-exclusion arrangement, or to ask questions about the process in advance, please contact our team at info@belvarianstay.com or speak directly with a Guest Services representative at the property.

If You Breach a Self-Exclusion

If a self-excluded guest enters the casino and is identified, they will be asked to leave promptly. Any gaming activity that occurs as a result of a breach will not be the responsibility of . We encourage self-excluded guests to make use of additional community support options (see Section 7) to reinforce the arrangement and address the underlying concerns that led to it.

7. Support From Trusted Contacts and Community Resources

Trusted Contacts

Speaking with someone you trust — a family member, a close friend, or another person whose judgement you value — can be one of the most straightforward and effective steps a person takes when gambling begins to feel out of balance. A trusted contact can offer perspective, help you hold yourself accountable to the limits you set, and support you in accessing further assistance if needed.

If you are concerned about someone else's gambling, expressing concern calmly and without judgement, and encouraging them to access support, is often more effective than direct confrontation. Our team can provide general guidance to concerned family members or friends on request.

New Zealand Community Support Services

New Zealand has a network of community-based support services available to people who are concerned about their own gambling or the gambling of someone close to them. These services are confidential, free of charge and accessible to residents and visitors.

Support services available in New Zealand include:

  • Confidential helpline services: Telephone and online helplines staffed by trained advisors who can speak with you confidentially about your concerns and help you identify next steps. These services are available at no cost and do not require you to have reached a point of crisis before calling.
  • Face-to-face support: Community organisations and support workers located throughout New Zealand, including in the Queenstown region, who offer individual and family support for gambling-related concerns.
  • Financial counselling: Independent financial guidance services are available for people whose gambling has affected their financial situation. These services can assist with budgeting, debt management and accessing emergency assistance.
  • Family and whānau support: Services specifically designed to support the family members and close contacts of people experiencing gambling-related difficulties.

We encourage guests to ask our Guest Services team about accessing these community resources. Information about locally available services is kept at the front desk and casino entry point, and our team will provide it without judgement or formality.

Regulatory Framework

Gambling in New Zealand is regulated by the relevant New Zealand government authority responsible for gambling oversight. That authority publishes public guidance on responsible gambling, maintains standards for gambling operators in New Zealand, and provides information for members of the public about their rights and about available support pathways. Guests seeking information from the regulatory body in its public capacity may contact it directly through channels published on official New Zealand government websites.

8. Our Commitment as a Venue

takes its responsibility as a casino operator seriously. Our commitments to guests include the following.

Staff Training

All casino team members receive training in responsible gambling practices. This includes recognising behavioural indicators that may suggest a guest is experiencing difficulty, approaching those situations with sensitivity and respect, and providing information about available support without unsolicited judgement.

Environment Standards

  • Clocks and exits are clearly visible in all gaming areas so that guests maintain an accurate sense of time.
  • Seating and rest areas outside the gaming floor are available for guests taking breaks.
  • Responsible gambling information, including details of community support services, is displayed at casino entry points and is available in print from Guest Services.
  • Our team will not offer inducements or promotions designed to encourage a guest to continue beyond their intended session.
  • Guests who appear to be in visible distress will be approached discreetly and offered assistance.

Marketing Standards

Belvarian Stay does not market its casino to persons under 21 years of age. Our marketing materials do not portray gambling as a solution to financial difficulty, as a guaranteed source of income, or in a way that is likely to appeal particularly to vulnerable persons.

Ongoing Review

We periodically review our responsible gambling practices against applicable New Zealand standards and guest feedback. Where improvements are identified, we implement them as part of our ongoing commitment to this area.
